![]() Hamoon, the main character in the film, suffers a shock when his wife wants a divorce. Through flashbacks, imagination, and dreams, Hamoun narrates a psychological story of a male mid-life crisis in Iran. This film is not just about a blind boy, but more about his sighted father, who is blind to see his beautiful family. The director achieves beauty through simplicity. He believes his disabled son will impede his possibilities. Having a blind boy to help is a further burden that causes him to curse his bad fortune. His poor father, Hashem, wanted to marry into a wealthy family with a young family to support. The boy, Mohammad, is loved by his grandfather and his two sisters. It is a heartwarming drama about an eight-year-old boy who is blind and lives in a secluded village with his widowed father, two sisters, and grandmother. It is another Iranian movie directed by Majid Majidi. The movie uses contemporary standard Persian and colloquial expressions to make it an excellent choice for elementary and other learners’ levels. Still, if you’re an intermediate Farsi learner, this is the film to see. The feature film includes a lot of political jargon. While non-Iranians may not quite understand the subtlety of it, the movie is undoubtedly is a must-watch. The movie tries to differentiate between true believers and those who use religion negatively to control the masses. The film revolves around the main character, a thief who escapes the prison but disguises himself as a Mullah’s role longer than he initially thought. Marmoulak ( The Lizard) is a political, social, and religious satire, funny yet thoughtful. The conversational context is encouraging for a beginner. ![]() If you’re searching for “real cinema” to help you improve Persian, this is a film to keep on your favorite list. The acting of Ali and Zohra is splendid, and the storyline is a very touching one. When he failed, he tries a new heartwarming trick to get a new pair of shoes. When Ali loses his sister’s pair of shoes, he goes to find them. The 1997 Persian movie presents an adorable tale of two siblings Ali and Zahra, living a miserable and stressful life. If you’re looking for an intriguing Persian family drama, Director Majid Majidi has a masterpiece for you: Children of heaven! The dialogues are helpful to improve pronunciation. It won over 100 nominations and awards, including the best foreign-language film for the Golden Globes and Oscars. If you’re after the best Persian movies, a separation could be a top choice. The film shows the essence of being human and doesn’t take any side. It was followed by a chain of events and intense court-drama that makes the film gripping, unusual, and full of emotions. It eventually led to a demand for divorce by Simin. However, the husband (Nader) intends to remain in Iran to care for his sick father. This is my all-time favorite Iranian flick.ĭirected and written by Asghar Farhadi, the flick narrates a complex story of an unhappily married middle-class couple with an eleven-year daughter, Termeh.īoth love each other, but Simin (the wife) wants to move abroad for a better life. Set in present-day Iran, A Separation is a fascinating melodrama about a troubled marriage. When I saw A Separation, I was so appalled over how good an Iranian movie could be. ![]() ![]() While writing the article you’re reading now, note that I don’t have the movie, nor its script, to hand, thus meaning that some of the details are only half-remembered and quite plausibly inaccurate. In the Pacific Rim universe, the term Kaiju is used specifically for a class of gigantic alien creatures that, via a portal in the Pacific called The Breach, are invading our planet from a base in the Anteverse. * Kaiju is a generic term used for any sort of monster, including outlandish ones that are mechanical or floral in nature. We see stuff that doesn’t make much sense in terms of materials science, engineering, physics or chemistry, and there are sheer impossibilities like the bit where Gipsy Danger glows red while falling through the atmosphere before landing safely, fully functional and with intact humans onboard. At the risk of repeating the opinion already notoriously proffered by my colleague and friend John Conway, the outstanding near-absence of women from the Pacific Rim universe is weird and inappropriate. Personally, I’ve simply enjoyed it as a massive, CG-laden romp based around giant Kaiju* and huge humanoid robots and, indeed, there are several major weaknesses, flaws and absurdities throughout both the movie and the Pacific Rim universe as a whole. You have been warned.Īs usual, I’m not going to pretend for a minute that Pacific Rim is a particularly special movie when it comes to plot, theme, or characters. So, in the spirit of the Tet Zoo article on Avatar, here are assorted thoughts and observations on the movie, focusing on the Kaiju. ![]() I’ve seen the movie twice now (once in IMAX) and have spent a lot of time talking about it online and IRL. Worse, when that impediment finally does arrive, in the form of a childhood trauma revealed with almost comical abruptness, the plot twist feels exactly like what is, an arbitrary contrivance introduced only to briefly delay happily-ever-aftering. Writer-director Wolf takes far too long to introduce any sort of impediment to the forging of a father-daughter connection and, inevitably, the formation of a nuclear family. (“I said I wanted to meet him,” Billy tells her disapproving mom, “but I never said I’d go easy on him.”) This budding relationship probably would be more engaging if Fortson weren’t encouraged so often to come across as a mouthy brat, and if the movie as a whole didn’t proceed at such a glacial pace. Much to his delight, and Josie’s discomfort, she readily accepts him as her dad - but not before busting his chops. Much of “Forever My Girl” is devoted to Liam’s eager if not desperate attempts to bond with Billy. (Specifically, she punches him in the gut after she spots him at the friend’s graveside service.) It takes only a bit longer for him to realize that Billy (Abby Ryder Fortson), Josie’s precocious daughter, is the child he never knew he fathered. Once he’s there, it doesn’t take long for him to have an awkward encounter with Josie. ![]() When he receives word of a childhood friend’s death in an auto mishap, however, Liam impulsively takes a return trip to St. In fact, he’s refrained from contacting any of the folks back home - including his estranged father, Brian (John Benjamin Hickey), the local pastor - while single-mindedly stoking his stardom, entertaining millions, and partying hearty. ![]() Of course, he never has answered that message. This film should've been my favourite in the trilogy but due to the last 20 minutes i'd have to give it to Evil Dead 2 instead. I can see that Raimi was trying out more unique shots with the battle sequence but it does somehow take away from the rest of the film. The film is an absolute blast almost all the way, but towards the last 20 minutes i felt like i kind of lost steam a bit.
